6 tips for organizing your freezer

19 September 2022

Grocery bill increasing? You need to develop your sense of organization and your ability to plan! Your worst enemy in terms of economy: it is waste. Organizing the freezer well can become an ally in the kitchen. We therefore offer you 6 tips that will allow you to save time and avoid waste.

1. Choose the right containers

In order to maintain the nutritional properties and quality of your frozen foods, you must limit the air present in the containers. You should therefore not choose containers that are too large in relation to the volume of food. On the other hand, it must be taken into account that food expands when frozen. If you use plastic containers, make sure they are sealed tightly. If you opt more for freezer bags, try to extract as much air as possible before putting it in the freezer.

2. Divide into realistic portions

Before freezing a product, it is important to think about how it will be consumed in the future. Are you going to consume it alone? With family? For lunch? By asking yourself these questions, you will be able to freeze your food in realistic portions and thus avoid waste.

3. Label the containers

On each container, note the date the product was frozen, as well as the contents of the container and its frozen quantity (e.g. 4 chicken breasts, July 20, 2022). Whether you're cooking a recipe or making a hasty dinner, it will be much more efficient and easier to locate your food in the freezer. You can write this information with a permanent marker directly on the freezer bags or on adhesive tape, when your food is in an airtight container.

4. Categorize products into storage bins

To make food easier to access, installing freezer storage bins is a very practical solution. You can easily obtain them in several stores that offer household items. Do you have a tomb freezer? The baskets will help you not to lose anything at the bottom of the freezer. Your storage bins will also allow you to classify your food by category (meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, etc.).

5. Place foods in a logical order

To avoid waste, you can store products according to their freezing date. This allows you to place the oldest foods and meals at the front and the most recent ones at the bottom of the freezer. With each new addition, you can rotate. So, the first frozen products will be the first consumed!

6. Make a list of products

A final helpful step is to label your freezer door with all the foods your freezer contains. In fact, you can put a large erasable sticker and write a list of products and quantities on it. By updating it as you go, you won't forget any products and can easily find a quick dinner idea, without even having to open your freezer!
